As a San Jose car accident attorney, it saddened me to hear how last year a high school softball coach from San Juan Hills was killed in a car accident when she was rear-ended. Now, nearly a year later, an arrest has been made in the case.
In April, a woman driving a Prius was headed north traveling 80 miles per hour on the 405 freeway near Edwards Street in San Diego. She did not pick up on the fact that traffic had stopped in front of her, so she allegedly careened into the rear of the victim’s Hyundai sedan.
The victim’s car hit into the car in front of her before crashing into the center divider. She ended up facing south on the northbound side of the highway. The victim was taken to nearby UCI Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead due to her injuries, while the driver of the offending vehicle suffered only minor scrapes.
Today, the California Highway Patrol took arrested the driver of the car that caused the accident. The Orange County District Attorney’s office said that the suspect, who will be brought up on charges of vehicular manslaughter, will face a maximum sentence of six years in jail.
I think it’s terrible that this young woman was killed in the incident, and my heart goes out to the family of the victim. Distracted driving is a rampant problem in this country. As has been illustrated in case after case, it’s vitally important to pay attention to the road at all times. And, as a car accident attorney in San Jose, I find that it’s also imperative to obey all suggested speed limit signs along your route. They’re there for a reason. Street signs of all kinds are put up to keep you and everyone else on the road safe from harm.
